Santorini Travel Guide – Where to Stay & What to Do

Few places on earth feel as dreamlike as Santorini. Think white-washed cliffside villages, the deep blue Aegean sparkling below, romantic sunset skies and winding laneways scented with bougainvillea. It’s one of those destinations that doesn’t just meet expectations — it exceeds them.

Whether you’re heading here for a honeymoon, a friendship getaway or a European summer adventure, Santorini offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, culture and those pinch-me moments you’ll never forget.

And if you want the best views on the island? Stay in Oia.

Below is my full Santorini travel guide, including where to stay, what to eat, and my 3-day itinerary with everything you shouldn’t miss — from blue-domed churches to sunset cruising and dune buggy exploring.

Where to Stay: Sophia View Apartment, Oia 💙

If waking up each morning to that postcard-perfect caldera view is your Santorini dream, Sophia View (sometimes called Sophia Castle View / Sophia Suites) in Oia is exactly where you want to be.

Why I love it:

  • Steps away from the famous Oia Castle sunset lookout
  • Private terrace or plunge pool overlooking the caldera
  • Peaceful, stylish, cave-style aesthetic
  • Easy access to Oia’s cafés, boutiques and walking trails

Oia can get crowded (especially at sunset) so staying right in the village means you can enjoy the beautiful quiet early mornings and late evenings — which are, honestly, the most magical times of day here.

Tip: Ask for an arrival transfer and pack light — there are steps! Lots of steps!

The Perfect 3-Day Santorini Itinerary

Day 1 – Explore Oia + Sunset Sailing Cruise

Morning:
Drop your bags and head straight out to explore Oia on foot. Wander through the narrow white laneways, peek into artisan boutiques and find the iconic blue-domed churches (go early to avoid influencers-in-the-wild crowds!).

Late Lunch at Amoudi Bay:
Walk (or taxi) down the steps to the small port of Amoudi Bay. Have seafood by the water — grilled octopus here is chef’s kiss.

Afternoon Relaxation:
Head back to Sophia View for pool time, photos and just soaking in the I-can’t-believe-this-is-real views.

Sunset Experience:
In the late afternoon, join a Sunset Oia Cruise. You’ll sail around the caldera, stop for swims, see the volcanic cliffs up close and watch the sun melt into the ocean. Dinner + drinks are usually included.

This is one of the best things to do in Santorini — absolutely worth it.

Day 2 – Dune Buggy Adventure + Fira Nightlife

Morning:
Pick up a dune buggy or ATV — they’re super fun and let you explore beyond the typical tourist spots.

Stop at Santorini’s iconic beaches:

  • Red Beach — dramatic cliffs and rust-red sand
  • Perissa (Black Beach) — long shore, beach bars, relaxed vibe
  • Vlychada — quieter, lunar-looking cliffs

Pack your cozzies, sunscreen and sandals and make sure you don’t mind getting dusty.

Lunch by the Sea:
Grab lunch at a beach taverna. Order:

  • Grilled sea bass
  • Tomato fritters (local specialty)
  • Greek salad with real feta slabs 😍

Afternoon:
Return to Oia to refresh.

Evening in Fira:
Head to Fira for nightlife — think sunset cocktails with a view and dance-till-late bars. Fira is lively and fun … a total contrast to the romantic calm of Oia.

Tip: Pre-organise transport back — taxis can be limited late.

Day 3 – Sunrise + Village Strolls + Wine

Sunrise in Oia:
Get up early, grab a coffee and watch the sun rise behind the domes.
It’s calm, golden and truly unforgettable.

Optional Village Hop:
Visit Imerovigli for high-perched views and quieter alleyways.

Lunch with a View:
Choose a cliffside terrace — the kind of place where lunch accidentally goes for hours.

Afternoon Winery Visit:
Santorini is known for Assyrtiko white wine, grown in volcanic soil. Book a tasting at:

  • Domaine Sigalas (near Oia)
  • Santo Wines (mega views!)

Departure:
Head to your ferry/flight full of sunshine, saltwater and a phone overflowing with blue-and-white magic.

Quick Tips for Your Trip

  • Best time to visit: May–June or September (warm but less crowded)
  • Book sunset restaurants + cruises early
  • Wear flat shoes — Santorini is stairs, stairs, and more stairs
  • Take photos early morning & blue hour for the prettiest light
  • ATV/buggy: drive carefully — roads are winding and shared with buses

Final Thoughts

Santorini is one of those rare destinations that looks exactly like the photos — but feels even better in real life. From sunset sails to cliffside breakfasts, cave-house nights, and adventures along the coast, it’s a place you’ll remember forever.
